SpiderOak is a US-basedcollaboration tool, online backup and file hosting service that allows users to access, synchronize and share data using a cloud-based server,[1][2] offered by a company of the same name. Its first offering, its online backup service later branded 'SpiderOak ONE', launched in December 2007. SpiderOak is accessible through an app for Windows, Mac and Linuxcomputer platforms, and Android, N900 Maemo and iOS mobile platforms.[3]

According to SpiderOak, the software uses encrypted cloud storage and client-side encryption key creation, so SpiderOak employees cannot access users' information. SpiderOak differentiates itself from its competition by this kind of encryption,[4] in provision for syncing files and folders across multiple devices, and in automatic de-duplication of data.[5]

Some components of SpiderOak are open-source; in 2009, the company announced its intent for the SpiderOak One client's code to be fully open-source in the future.[6] As of 2016, the SpiderOak One client's source code is only available open-source for mobile platforms, with no current plans to make the desktop client's code open-source.[7] SpiderOak's password manager Encryptr is open-source; the source code for its group messaging application Semaphor is published to allow auditing.[8][9]

SpiderOak was founded in 2007 by Ethan Oberman and Alan Fairless as an encrypted private backup program.[10] In 2013, SpiderOak began developing the Crypton framework, 'a JavaScript framework for building applications where the server doesn't know the contents it's storing on behalf of users.'[11] Crypton is an open-source project allowing developers to easily add encryption security to mobile applications.[12] By mid-2014, according to Oberman, SpiderOak had near 1 million users.[13]

As of 2014, SpiderOak was headquartered in Chicago and employed 42 staff, headed by CEO Alan Fairless.[13] Around the same time, the company had offices in Chicago and Kansas City, and was hiring remote employees inside and outside of the US.[14][15] In 2015, SpiderOak raised $3.5 million in Series A funding, bringing its total funding to around $9 million.[16]

In February 2017, SpiderOak discontinued using the phrase 'zero knowledge' to describe their service following public criticism that the phrase conflicted with the mechanism behind cryptographic zero-knowledge proofs. SpiderOak adopted the phrase 'no knowledge' for their marketing.[17]

In November 2017, founder Alan Fairless was replaced as CEO by Christopher Skinner, who announced that the company would be expanding into enterprise software, partially funded by a $2 million Series B round.[18]

On August 1, 2018, the warrant canary on SpiderOak's website briefly vanished, followed by some system downtime. It was then replaced by a transparency report. Five days later, the canary was re-signed using GPG encryption. By August 9, Spideroak had also updated their transparency report, making a statement concerning the canary.[19][20] It is impossible to tell if the change was internally driven or canary was tripped and the company has been compelled by court order to hide the fact.[21]

Wuala (Affoltern) Change Log

* Sync: You can now synchronize local folders with Wuala. The same wuala sync folder can be synchronized to local folders on many computers. All changes a user makes in these local folders or even in wuala are replicated to wuala and all other local folders connected to the same wuala folder
* Removed Tabs: We have integrated the tabs accross the top (myfiles, etc.) into the well known folder tree view. We have introduced two new top level elements for Backups and Sync Folders
* Visual Refresh: We have a whole new set of Icons and colors. Backup and Sync are shown as annotations on folders. Sharing status is still shown with the colors yellow/blue/red. In the thumbnail view, we additionally show an icon on the folder when it is shared or public
* Folder Thumbs Are Gone: By default, we now longer show thumbnails on folders. You can turn them back on in the advanced preferences.
* No More World Tab: We have removed the world tab. There is a new dialog that allows to find groups. For finding public files, we recommend using the web search engine of your choice. We have taken measures to ensure that public files are indexed freqently
* 64bit Support for Mac: We can now run in both 32-bit and 64bit Java virtul machines on Mac OSX
* Removed FSI Delay: We now longer delay changes made on the wuala drive. This should improve the stability of the FSI and reduce dataloss in case of crashes. The FSI now uses a breaking mechanism to prevent changes from piling up when network connectivity is bad
