Windows Chromium

This is the free, open-source browser software that's behind Google's Chrome browser. You can browse the web with Chromium without having to worry about being tracked. Chromium is an open-source browser project that provides a safer, faster, and more stable way for all Internet users to experience the web.

Google Chrome has really produced a great browser, but adoption of that browser has been moderately slowed down because of Google's openness about privacy and the lack of insight people have on where their data is being sent and how it is being used. With Chromium, you're able to take advantage of the great speed of the Google Chrome browser without having to worry about where your browsing habits are being sent because the source of this project is fully viewable.

One advantage of using the Chromium browser is the fast speed and its minimalistic design. It features a very sleek tabbed-layout with options and support for addons. By default, the releases of Chromium should support Vorbis, Theora and WebM codecs and fully supports HTML5 and CSS3. As for being standards-compliant, Chromium scores a perfect 100/100 for being able to render pages exactly how they should be as defined by the World Wide Web Consortium (or the WC3).

Other plugins popular among Internet users are also available in Chromium. Though Google Chrome did come with Adobe Flash and Chromium didn't, in our tests the newest versions of Chromium did support Adobe Flash so that wasn't a problem.

As a side note, if you already do have Google Chrome installed, Chromium will try to grab and install all of your preferences and addons from the Google Chrome installation.

Overall, using Chromium provides a very good user experience and might make overall adoption of Chrome/Chromium higher when people realize that Chromium actually does provide a fast, safe and PRIVATE way of browsing the web. Chrome vs. Chromium? We'd choose the latter every day of the week. Happy browsing!

Getting Involved‎ > ‎

Download Chromium

You can test Chrome builds or Chromium builds. Chrome builds have the most infrastructure for analyzing crashes and reporting bugs. They also auto-update as new releases occur, which makes them a good choice for most uses. Chrome Canary is available for Windows and Mac and autoupdates daily. Other channels (dev and beta) are available.
Chromium builds do not auto-update, and do not have symbols. This makes them most useful for checking whether a claimed fix actually works. Use the following instructions to find builds:

Easy Point and Click for latest build:

Open up https://download-chromium.appspot.com

Easy Script to download and run latest Linux build:

Not-as-easy steps:

  1. Head to https://commondatastorage.googleapis.com/chromium-browser-snapshots/
  2. Choose your platform: Mac, Win, Linux, ChromiumOS
  3. Pick the Chromium build number you'd like to use
    1. The latest one is mentioned in the LAST_CHANGE file
  4. Download the zip file containing Chromium
  5. There is a binary executable within to run

Please file bugs as appropriate.

Downloading old builds of Chrome / Chromium

Let's say you want a build of Chrome 44 for debugging purposes. Google does not offer old builds as they do not have up-to-date security fixes.
However, you can get a build of Chromium 44.x which should mostly match the stable release.
  1. Look in https://googlechromereleases.blogspot.com/search/label/Stable%20updates for the last time '44.' was mentioned.
  2. Loop up that version history ('44.0.2403.157') in the Position Lookup
  3. In this case it returns a base position of '330231'. This is the commit of where the 44 release was branched, back in May 2015.*
  4. Open the continuous builds archive
  5. Click through on your platform (Linux/Mac/Win)
  6. Paste '330231' into the filter field at the top and wait for all the results to XHR in.
  7. Eventually I get a perfect hit: https://commondatastorage.googleapis.com/chromium-browser-snapshots/index.html?prefix=Mac/330231/
    1. Sometimes you may have to decrement the commit number until you find one.
  8. Download and run!
* As this build was made at 44 branch point, it does not have any commits merged in while in beta.
Typically that's OK, but if you need a true build of '44.0.2403.x' then you'll need to build Chromium from the 2403 branch. Some PortableApps/PortableChromium sites offer binaries like this, due to security concerns, the Chrome team does not recommend running them.

The next Windows 10 update will integrate the newest Chromium flavor of its Edge browser. Plus, this next update will start a new naming scheme that promises to be simpler than the current one. The new Microsoft Edge is based on Chromium and was released on January 15, 2020. It is compatible with all supported versions of Windows, and macOS. With speed, performance, best in class compatibility for websites and extensions, and built-in privacy and security features, it's the only browser you'll ever need. Chromium is a unique, open-source browser by Google, running independently as The Chromium Project, building a repository of knowledge-based code, which forms the base of Google Chrome, as well as Microsoft Edge and Opera. Windows devices come in a rich array of form factors and input modalities, including traditional desktop and laptop PCs, 2-in-1 devices, and other tablets and pen devices. We heard your feedback looking for a better touch input experience in our early Chromium preview builds, and set out to take an inventory of the controls to identify.
